My Mission

AFFORDABILITY. HEALTHCARE. COMMUNITY Safety.

JOE BUSHNELL

Joe Bushnell is a proud Tacoma native, lifelong community advocate, and public servant dedicated to creating a city and a state that works for everyone. Born to a refugee mother and a small business owner father, Joe grew up with a deep appreciation for resilience, hard work, and the power of community.

Elected in 2021 as Tacoma’s – and Washington State’s – first Cambodian-American Councilmember, and currently serving as Deputy Mayor, Joe represents District 5 encompassing South Tacoma, the South End, and East Tacoma. As a U.S. Marine Corps Combat Veteran, Joe spent over a decade serving his country.

Beyond policymaking, Joe remains deeply committed to grassroots community service. He supported the creation of City Council internships and summer shadow opportunities for students and championed grants for local non-profits. He previously served as Chair of the South Tacoma Neighborhood Council and has been an active volunteer with neighborhood cleanups, tree planting projects, and the Toys for Tots program.

A graduate of Stadium High School and The Evergreen State College, where he studied political science and economics, Joe is passionate about fostering a more inclusive, sustainable City and State. Whether advocating for community priorities, representing Tacoma on regional boards, or lending a hand at a local volunteer event, Joe’s mission is to build a stronger future for every resident.

To the right: Joe and his wife Almirah recently married.

ISSUES

AFFORDABILITY

Regular folks in our community are being left behind. We’re paying rising costs and rising taxes, while large corporations see record breaking profits.

Healthcare

I fully support universal healthcare for all. No family should lose healthcare because of where they work or how much they make.

Community Safety

Our communities have suffered from the inadequate resourcing of mental health and addiction treatment services. It is the duty of the state legislature to take bold steps in addressing this issue.
